The IX-th International Russian-Kazakh Symposium "Coal Chemistry and Ecology of Kuzbass" started in Kemerovo On October 12.

The IX-th International Russian-Kazakh Symposium "Coal Chemistry and Ecology of Kuzbass" started in Kemerovo On October 12. This scientific event is held by the Federal Research Center for Coal and Coal Chemistry (FRC-CCC) SB RAS in cooperation with the Scientific Research Institute of Combustion Problems (Kazakhstan). This symposium is dedicated to the 30-th anniversary of the establishment of the Kemerovo Scientific Center of the SB RAS.

The purpose of the event is to exchange the experience of Russian and foreign scientists, coordinate research work in chemistry and technology for coal processing, cooperate usage of coal and other types of fuel, exchange scientific and technical information on the fundamental and technological foundations of the use and implementation of environmental technologies, effective systems for waste water treatment.

For the first time the Symposium has been held in the videoconference mode. To achieve the most effectiveness, a number of organizational technical measures were held: a conference room in the FRC-CCC was fit up with a full set of technical equipment and an Internet platform for conferences.

The official opening and greeting took place at 14.00. The start time was chosen for the comfortable nonresident scientists' participation, taking into account the different time zones in Russia. On the first day, six plenary reports were listened.

The highest scientific level of the Symposium is confirmed by the participation of four Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, two of whom are laureates of the International Prize "Global Energy" ("Energy Nobel Prize"). They are the academician Kontorovich A.E. (2009), academician S.V. Alekseenko (2020). The international level of the Symposium is also confirmed by the participation of the academician Budebazaryn Avid, the chief scientific secretary of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences in Ulan Bator and the academician of the IAS-HS Z.A. Mansurov, the Head of the Institute of Combustion Problems, Almaty.

Z.R. Ismagilov noted that the mode of the event allows to communicate productively, despite the threat of a pandemic, wished all participants good health and fruitful work.

The participants were greeted by:

Dmitry V. Islamov, Ph.D., Deputy Chairman of the Parlament Committee on Energy, Deputy of the Parlament of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation;

Sergey A. Pfezer, Ph.D., Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Kuzbass;

Zulkhair A. Mansurov, Academician of the Institute of Combustion Problems, Almaty;

Budebazaryn Avid, Academician of the IAS-HS, Chief Scientific Secretary of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences;

Sergey V. Alekseenko, Academician of RAS, Scientific Director of the Institute of Thermophysics SB RAS, Novosibirsk;

Valery A. Kryukov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Economics and Industrial Engineering of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk;

Irina A. Ganieva, Sc.D., Director of "Scientific and Educational Center "Kuzbass", Kemerovo.

The speakers noted the uniqueness of this scientific event, the regularity of its holding, praised the work of its organizers, the international level of cooperation and the scientific potential of the joint research.

Plenary reports were presented by:

Aleksey E. Kontorovich, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Citizen of the Kemerovo Region (2009), Hero of Kuzbass (2019), Head of the Kemerovo Scientific Center (2009-2019), organizer for the Federal Research Center for Coal and Coal Chemistry SB RAS (2015).

The honorary co-chairman of the Symposium in his report "Academic Science in Kuzbass (to the 30th Anniversary of the Kemerovo Scientific Center)" presented a complete historical background on the development of academic science in Kuzbass from 1903 to the present. He spoke in detail about the role of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, RAS and scientists who contributed to the development of Kuzbass science.

Dmitry V. Islamov presented his report "The role of coal in Russia and the world: today and tomorrow." He dwelled on the internal and external challenges of the modern world economy, coal mining and the prospects for the coal industry in Russia.

Zinfer R. Ismagilov presented his report "Coal for power engineering and for deep processing. The situation in the world and in Russia". He assessed the possibilities for the development of deep processing of coal and coal chemistry in Russia, and outlined the main scientific directions of the FRC-CCC:

  • • Coal chemistry (composition, structure, properties, mineral part, release of organic matter, humic acids, etc.);
  • • Deep processing technologies (production of metallurgical coke, coke-chemical products, combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, liquefaction, CO2 utilization, activated carbons, sorbents);
  • • Carbon nanomaterials (fuel cells, supercapacitors, electric batteries, storage of methane and hydrogen);
  • • Carbon fibers, composites;
  • • Methane from coal, methane hydrates, problems of carcinogenicity of the coal region, technologies for environmental protection.

The academician presented extensive material on the scale of development in deep processing of coal and coal chemistry in China and Western countries.

The result of international cooperation was the opening of the Russian-Chinese Research Center for Materials and Technologies for Environmental Protection in Kemerovo on the basis of the FRC. The center began its work on September 1, 2020 in the structure of the SB RAS as a scientific unit, on a network basis, coordinating research and development of the SB RAS institutes on the following problems:

  • • improvement of existing and creation of new materials, methods and technologies for the neutralization of industrial and agricultural waste;
  • • purification of gas emissions;
  • • cleaning and re-cultivation of contaminated soils;
  • • biological and chemical treatment of domestic and industrial waste water;
  • • carrying out our own promising research and development in this area.

To solve the complex problems of the coal-mining region, to develop technologies, the Russian-Chinese Research Center will cooperate with the institutes of the SB RAS and universities of Kuzbass and other regions.
